Beach’s future closely linked to flooding plans
THE WET WEATHER that dumped several inches of rain on the area in the past 10 days was not a hurricane. The Saffir-Simpson Scale, relied on to categorize the strength of a tropical system, measures wind speed, not rainfall.
But don’t tell that to residents of Pungo, Sandbridge and other parts of Virginia Beach who saw heavy precipitation and tidal currents result in widespread flooding, eerily similar to many of the named storms to pass over the region in recent years…
Vital roads were rendered impassible, and several homes were swamped by the slowly encroaching water. The city opened a shelter at Landstown High School for people affected, just as a precaution.
